Arthritis Management
People with arthritis often have stiff joints- largely because they are in pain and avoid movements that
hurt. By immobilizing arthriticjoints, however the stiffness and pain only get worse. Our staff can help teach you how to do a range of motion and strengthening exercises that will improve your function without increasing pain.
Preserving good range of motion is key to maintaining the ability to perform daily activities. Therefore, increasing the range of motion of a joint is the primary focus of physical therapy.
Building strength in the involved muscles surrounding the joint also is extremely important, since the stronger muscles can better stabilize a weakened joint.
We also provide mobilization therapies which include traction ( gentle, steady pulling ) massage and manipulation ( using the hands to restore normal movement to stiff joints ). When done by a trained professional, these methods can help control pain and increase joint motion and muscle and tendon flexibility.
Lymphedema Management
The Lymphatic system is a network of vessels that work in conjunction with your venous system to recirculate excess fluid. Lymphedema occurs most often in the arms and legs, when the channels and nodes transport the protein rich lymph fluids are impaired from cumulative damage, surgery and/or radiation. Lymphedema is a chronic condition that may occur immediately or months to years following cancer treatment.
Patients referred to Finger Lakes Physical Therapy may receive one or more of the following treatments:
